Tsumugi Kimono [Honba Kumejima Tsumugi] With Certificate of Authenticity, Important Intangible Cultural Property, Black-Brown, Pure Silk, Kasuri Pattern, Lined
This is a kimono made of Kumejima Tsumugi, a nationally important intangible cultural property produced on Kumejima Island in Okinawa Prefecture.
Kumejima Tsumugi (Kumejima woven silk) is made in Kumejima Town, Okinawa Prefecture. It is a traditional textile woven in a rich variety of colors, utilizing the abundant natural blessings of the island, which floats in the coral reef sea about 100 kilometers west of the main island of Okinawa.
The charm of Kumejima Tsumugi lies in the fact that each piece has the individuality of the artisan, as one person handles all processes from design and dyeing to weaving.
It was designated as a nationally important intangible cultural property in 2004.
This is a classic piece featuring the characteristic dark brown color of Kumejima Tsumugi, adorned with traditional kasuri (ikat) patterns such as Tui-gwa (birds).
The deep texture, unique to mud dyeing, is created by repeatedly dyeing with Gool (Smilax china) and Tekachi (Rhaphiolepis indica) and mud mordanting. You can feel the warm glow of the reddish-brown kasuri from the Gool dyeing.
This item comes with certificates of inspection by the Okinawa Prefecture Textile Inspection Association, a certificate of traditional craft, and a traditional paper tag.
We hope you will enjoy this kimono, whether you are a fan of Okinawan kimonos or want to wear a higher-grade tsumugi that stands out from the crowd, paired with your favorite Nagoya obi or hanhaba obi. (^^)
