SL Steam Locomotive - SH1 D51 Challenging the Jōmon Pass on the Sekihoku Main Line D51 + Rear Helper Locomotive
1973 D51 + Helper Locomotive Challenging the Tokiwa Pass at Tokiwa Signal Station on the Sekihoku Main Line
Tokiwa Signal Station was a signal station (abolished) on the Sekihoku Main Line of Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido), located in Kinka, Rubeshibe-cho, Kitami City, Hokkaido.
It was located approximately 10.3 km from Ikedagawa Station, near the Abashiri end of the Tokiwa Tunnel. It was established with a switchback layout to assist trains that could not start on the steep gradient.
At one point, it also handled passengers as a temporary stop. In the 1970s, as the era of steam locomotives on the Sekihoku Main Line drew to a close, railway fans, primarily engaged in railway photography, began visiting the signal station.
The passing loop was taken out of use on July 1, 2001, after which it only functioned as a boundary for block sections. As part of cost reduction and facility rationalization efforts across JR Hokkaido lines, it was officially abolished on March 4, 2017, with the timetable revision.
