Description
1973 C58 on the Senmo Line, Kawayu Station, seen off by the imposing Mt. Iwo

Atosanupuri, the source of the hot springs at the famous Kawayu Onsen, means naked mountain in Ainu. As its name suggests, the mountainside is devoid of trees, with steam rising with a roaring sound from numerous vents, said to be over 1000. The unique smell of sulfur permeates the surroundings. Locally, it has long been known as Mt. Iwo, and its ability to view the fumaroles up close consistently amazes visitors with its dynamism. This mountain, once prosperous from sulfur mining, also laid the foundation for the development of the town of Teshikaga through the railway laid to transport the mined sulfur.
