Lithography is a printmaking technique with over 200 years of history. As the Japanese translation seki-ban-ga suggests, it began as a technique for printing images drawn on stone onto paper. Unlike etching (copperplate printing), which requires advanced skills from the artist, lithography was initially used as an industrial technique because it allowed for easier reproduction of images. From the 19th century onwards, artists like Edgar Degas (1834–1917) took notice and, in collaboration with printers, began creating unique artworks using this technique, leading to its recognition as an art form.

While current printing methods involve photographing or scanning the original artwork to create printing plates, in lithography, the artist draws the image directly onto the plate itself. Nowadays, metal plates are often used instead of stone, and this item also uses a metal plate, but the artist still draws the image directly onto the plate. As a result, the images drawn with lithographic pencils or chalk are transferred to paper with a texture that appears as if drawn directly onto the paper.
