Description
In 1860, William C. Quantrill used the alias Charlie Hart in Lawrence, Kansas, while working as a gambler and schoolteacher before becoming involved in border violence. He initially associated with both pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups, even planning an abolitionist raid in late 1860, but then secretly betrayed the abolitionists. By the end of 1860, he was living near Lawrence, had been charged with horse theft, and was on the run.
