Released in North America in August 2003, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a critically acclaimed tactical role-playing game developed by Nippon Ichi Software.  The series is legendary among RPG fans for its immense depth, comical dialogue, and absurd progression limits.  The Mission: Discovering his father's death and that the realm is in total chaos with rival demons fighting for supremacy, Laharl sets out to reclaim his rightful place on the throne as the next Overlord.  Key Characters: He is joined by his devious vassal Etna, a quirky squad of explosive demon penguins called Prinnies, and an idealistic angel trainee named Flonne.  Grid-Based Combat: Battles take place on a turn-based, 3D isometric grid map.  Lift & Throw: Characters can lift and throw teammates or enemies across the map to extend movement range, isolate targets, or combine forces.  Geo Panels: Grid spaces often feature color-coded tiles that grant stat boosts, status effects, or explosive chain-reactions across the battlefield.  The Item World: Players can literally enter a randomized, multi-floor dungeon inside any item or weapon in their inventory. Clearing floors levels up that specific item's power.  Extremes Strategy: While the core campaign takes about 40 hours, completionists can level characters all the way up to Level 9999 and deal millions of points of damage to defeat massive post-game optional bosses.
