Studio Pottery Squat Vase Carved Band Speckled Ash Glaze Stamped Signed

The band around the shoulder is carved, not moulded. The potter threw the pot, let it stiffen to leather hard, and then cut a row of vertical strokes through the surface with a loop tool, working round while the wheel turned slowly. Each stroke is slightly different in width and the spacing drifts and recovers, which is the signature of a hand doing it live rather than a mould reproducing it. The glaze is an ash type, thin and speckled, breaking pale over the carved ridges and pooling darker in the cuts, so the decoration darkens itself. That is the whole reason to carve under a running glaze. You cut the pattern and the kiln colours it for you. Turn it over and there is an impressed potter stamp inside a ring on the raw clay foot, a personal chop rather than a signature. Potters who use a chop are usually the ones who have made enough pots to want a faster mark than writing their name. Squat, wide shouldered, narrow footed. It reads as considerably older than it is, which is the compliment the maker was after. Condition: Used. No chips, no cracks and no crazing found. Carved band crisp.
