Kyoto Natural Finishing Whetstone "Slightly Hard" 436g Suita Catfish + Scrap Wood [Purple Ironwood] New
Re-listed with a reduced starting price.
I believe it's from Kyoto. It's thick but the surface area is small, so how about for small knives like a kodachi (short sword) or ajikiri deba (small filleting knife)?
Personally, I feel it's on the harder side. The grain doesn't seem to be an issue. It's not too hard, so I don't think you'll need polishing powder.
For its intended use, I think a high-carbon steel would be good. Recent stainless steels, especially powder steels, tend to be very hard. I think forged knives would pair well with this. The sample knife shown is not included.
The base was given to me by a furniture craftsman. It's a scrap piece of wood [Ironwood]. As the name suggests, it's hard and heavy.
The size is 137 x 71 x 27 mm.
The top surface (shown in the photo) has been lightly polished with an organic wood oil and beeswax polish. The photos are after application. (Applied to all surfaces except the bottom.)
This is not the common wet photo; it is dry. Besides being a base, it's also a scrap piece, so how about for knife handles or stands?
The sample used is for illustration purposes and is not included.
