【Rare Scientific Name】Four-horned Cicada Specimen *Bocydium chrysomeloides*
Scientific Name: Bocydium sp.
The name might sound like a joke by Japanese scholars, but it's not.
The scientific name is derived from the Latin word tintinnabulum, meaning bell, combined with the suffix -fer, meaning to bear or to carry.
Bocydium comes from the genus Bocydium, which is also a Latinized reading of a combination of the Greek word kys, meaning swift, and the diminutive suffix -idium (used for insects to specify a smaller size or to emphasize their smallness). This is also a coincidence.
Therefore, it means small and swift, bearing bells.
Undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. This species lives solitarily, and both nymphs and adults inhabit the undersides of leaves, feeding on sap. Adults are attracted to artificial light at night. Detailed ecological information is not well understood.
Known from the states of Bahia, Espírito Santo (Conceio da Barra, Santa Teresa), and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
