It is said that Kamui Kotan stones are created by the rapids of Kotan, as rocks from the Kitami and Teshio mountain ranges, formed by crustal movements from the Jurassic period 200 million years ago when the Japanese archipelago was connected to the continent, have been carried down the Ishikari River over vast periods of time.
As a water stone, it is extremely hard and therefore lustrous without polishing. However, stones with variations in shape are extremely rare and have been preserved as prized scenic pieces.
My grandfather collected these, and my aunt used them in tea ceremonies.
The base was made in nearby Kotan and shows signs of age, which should be considered part of its character.

The hanging scroll in the background is not included.
