【Cicada Perched on a Branch (Natural Crystal)】Crystal Carving, Paperweight, Chinese Stationery, Ornament, Moss Inclusions
In Japan, cicadas spend seven years underground and live for only ten days after emerging and becoming adults, symbolizing mono no aware (the pathos of things) and greatly influencing Japanese aesthetics. China also views cicadas similarly; due to the long larval stage and their emergence from the earth to fly, they are considered auspicious creatures, a symbol of rebirth and resurrection.
When carved into natural crystal (a crystal of good fortune), it becomes a source of immortal energy (luck) that foretells good fortune, luck, and resurrection.
This piece features a cicada perched on a branch carved from natural crystal. Within the crystal are moss-like inclusions (inclusions are formed when minerals like chlorite or mudstone are trapped during crystal growth; green inclusions are said to originate from China globally). Depending on the light, when held, the back of the cicada appears black in the center, as if designed to represent a focal point (Photo 20).
Additionally, there is a hole at the tip, allowing for a string to be passed through for hanging.
