Description
Scientific Name: Aeshna crenata
Common Name: Great Blue-eyed Darner
Previously considered a Japanese endemic species, Aeshna nigroflava Martin, 1909, it has since been included under Aeshna crenata following DNA analysis and other studies.
Inhabits ponds and marshes with emergent and floating-leaved aquatic plants surrounded by trees, from lowlands to mountainous areas, as well as high-altitude bogs and alpine tarns. Prefers open ponds and wetlands in relatively cold regions. Compared to the Blue-eyed Darner (Aeshna juncea), it is found in lower elevations as well.
