* Sanpo/Sanbo is a stand for offerings to deities and Buddhas.
It consists of a square tray (Oshiki) with a base that has three cutouts (Kurigata). It is used to place offerings for Shinto altars (sacred food, Kagami Mochi, etc.), pillow decorations for funerals, and festival offerings (Tsukimi dango, Kashiwa mochi, etc.).
Its origin is said to be the three cutouts on the base, or it is also said to derive from the Buddhist concept of Buddha, Dharma, Sangha (Sanpo).
Place the side without cutouts (opposite the seam) facing the deity (towards the back).
