Vintage 1980s Russian Mstera Lacquer Box, By the Pike’s Command

A hand-painted Russian Mstera lacquer box illustrating the beloved fairy tale By the Pike’s Command (По щучьему велению). The story follows Yemelya, whose act of kindness toward a magical pike leads to an extraordinary adventure and lasting good fortune. Rich black lacquer is accented with shimmering gilt highlights, delicate gold dot work, and an ornate gilt border, while the interior is finished in traditional red lacquer. The lower left of the painting is inscribed “Мстера По щучьему велению.” There also appears to be an artist’s signature or initials in the lower right, though they are difficult to decipher. Size: 5.25” x 2.75” x 1.25” Condition: Hinge works well. Small ding to the lower edge of the lid just touching the border, small lacquer loss on the left border, light edge wear, and typical scuffing to the underside. Interior remains clean and glossy.
